Monstrous Mia
Role: Production Designer
Client: Arxlight Pictures

Monstrous Mia is a 3D animated feature film based on the bestselling book series “Monstrous Maud” by author A.B. Saddlewick, directed by Verena Felse and produced by Arxlight Pictures.

I worked on the film from 2023 to 2025 as Production Designer. As such, I was responsible for defining the entire look of the film, initially directing the art department for the characters and sets, and then overseeing the various departments for CGI development (modeling, surfaces, FX, lighting/comp).

Initially we wanted a rather stylized look, with flat, textured shapes and non-PBR lighting, but over the course of production we had to dilute some of the more “pushy” aspects to find the right visual balance on time and within budget. This was particularly challenging, but thanks to incredible supervisors and their teams I think we were able to achieve a great result.

One of the first step was to explore the various possibilities for the film aesthetic

After further exploration, we settled on using 3D stock assets as a base to build our world. Still, we had to keep costs down where possible and so we came up with fairly flexible rules for assetts, that could be either 2D drawn (eg small characters props), stock photos or 3D model (eg character Alt Modes, Backgrounds etc). All in all it a fairly fluid and reliable process. Below a selection of style frames, test renders and production notes.
